Castleblayney Men's Club Notes 12th July 2010
CASTLEBLAYNEY GOLF NOTES
It was with great shock and sadness that the members of Castleblayney Golf Club heard of the sudden death of Maurice Hanratty (Mau) last week. Members had been delighted to see Mau back on the course lately and were all the more surprised at the sad news of his passing. Mau had been a stalwart for many years in the club and his sharp wit and Elvis impersonations will be badly missed by all. We extend our sympathy to the Hanratty family and also to former Lady Captain Jeanette who has lost a special friend.
On the club scene Kieran McMahon hit a magnificent 41Pts to win last weekend’s weekend competition sponsored by Corrigan’s Kitchen. Kieran balances every weekend between the football pitch in Culloville and his new home in Concra by saving points in one location and scoring points in the other. A well respected goalkeeper, Kieran has safe hands and obviously a midas touch on the golf course too. His one over par total ensures that Kieran is coming into form at the right time just before captains. Anthony Keenan secured second place with a solid 39Pts in difficult conditions. Anthony took a prolonged break from the golf course in recent years but has come back in great form and has the ability and talent to win many more competitions. Third place went to Paul Carey with 38 Pts. Paul has become a regular visitor to the winner’s enclosure and picks up several prizes every year. He has become a very accomplished golfer and represents the club on a regular basis. There is no doubt that Paul will be well backed by punters when Captains Day comes along. Well done to all the winners.
Last year the younger members of the club blazed a trail on the course but this year things have changed with the more senior members of the club taking the honours on a more frequent basis. That was until Jason Murphy hit 39 Pts to win the Mc Elvaney Motors sponsored weekend competition. Indeed but for Martin Allen securing second place we would have seen a clean sweep by the Murphy’s, as dad Paul was in third place with Uncle Francis in fourth. That must be something of a club record. Speaking of records, last week we thought the appearance of a Double Decker bus at Concra was rare but an Albatross scored on the Par 5 fifteenth is indeed even rarer. This was achieved by Niall Dignam on Saturday in the club competition. Rumour has it that Niall fancied the shot so much he actually went up the 240yards to straighten the flag before he hit the shot.
Next Weekend
Next weekend’s competition is the Lady Captain’s prize to the men and is the perfect chance to hone your skills before our big day. Usual booking system to apply.
Howell Cup
Noel Gorman’s Howell Cup Team came unstuck in dramatic circumstances last Sunday evening at Concra. Trailing 10-6 from the first leg Noel’s Team certainly had it all to do against a strong Cavan Golf Club team. A couple of early wins gave the Blayney boys a great chance of advancing but in the cruellest of circumstances they lost out to the last putt in the last match, eventually going out on a 16 ½ - 15 ½ score line.
Juveniles / Junior’s
Every Thursday starting from Thursday 22nd July Juvenile and Junior 9 hole competitions will begin. Juvenile competitions will begin at 10am sharp followed by a Junior competition at 11.30 sharp. Please contact Noel Gorman for further details.
