Pauric pulls ALL the pints
The scoring bonanza continued again this weekend in Costa de Blayney as both the temperature and golf soared close to boiling point. In weather befitting the Algarve, Pauric Conlon produced a magnificent two under par (46Pts) to win the HEINEKEN sponsored weekend competition. Pauric has refocused his efforts this year and since his return from early season warm weather training in Portugal he has been a model of consistency on the golf course. Pauric is renowned for making birdies and had the course record in his sights for most of the round, but unfortunately came up just short. Well done on your super score. Second place went to Paul Shortt who has been regularly hovering in the top dozen this year. His 45 Pts would normally be good enough to win most competitions but not this weekend. Eddie Heavin also produced a superb round of 44 Pts but had to settle for third place. Both Paul and Eddie must be wondering just what they have to do to win a weekend competition. Congrats to all the winners.
Pauric Conlon (8) 46 Pts
Paul Shortt (19) 45 Pts
Eddie Heavin (25) 44 Pts
Next Weekend
Next weekend’s competition is sponsored by MCKENNA & CAIRNS and can be played from Friday to Sunday inclusive. Self draws as usual will be at 9am and 1pm. The tee will be reserved on Saturday from 2pm – 3pm for the Ulster Fourball match against Omagh.
Pierce Purcell
Martin McGinn’s Pierce Purcell team were too strong for Slieve Russell Golf Club when they clashed last week in Clones. With a place in the last 16 up for grabs, Team Captain Martin again put out a strong and experienced team that never looked in trouble. Performance of the day went to the fast improving Mickie Marry and PJ Harte who recorded an impressive 6 & 5 win. The other results were as follows:
Joe Quinn & Noel Flanagan Snr Won 1 up.
Michael Smyth & Mickey Quinn Won 2 & 1.
Mickie Marry & PJ Harte Won 6 & 5.
Mick Fee & Gerry McCaul Won 5 & 4.
Eamon Toal & Paddy King called in.
Team Captain Martin will find out his next round opposition early this week when the draw is made on Tuesday night. Congrats and well done to Martin and all his team and best of luck in the next round.
Rossmore Cup
Despite a super first round home performance against Warrenpoint last week in Castleblayney, Mickie Marry’s team were unfortunately unable to finish the job in the away match last week. Needing a ½ point to advance to the next round the Blayney boys came up against a strong and determined Warrenpoint team who were just too good on the day. Commiserations to Mickie and his team who had hoped to get a good run in the competition.
Ulster Four Ball
Mickie Reid’s Ulster Fourball Team have it all to do after a difficult 3rd round first leg away match against Omagh. They trail 4-1 and 11 holes after a titanic away battle against a strong Omagh outfit. Noel Reilly and Patsy Boyle secured the single point for Blayney who now must produce a huge performance this Saturday at 2pm if they are to progress to the next round. Mickie has stated that he will leave no stone unturned in his quest for the clean sweep that is needed. So if you have a few hours to spare this Saturday afternoon your support and encouragement would be appreciated.
Jimmy Bruen
After their 19th hole heroics against Mannan Castle in the last round, our Jimmy Bruen team have again drawn difficult opposition. A trip to Kilkeel to play Ardglass Golf Club has been the reward for Club President and Team Captain Michael Smyth’s team. Michael must refocus his troops for what will definitely be another tight encounter. Best of luck to all the team.
Mixed Scrambles
The mixed scramble continues this Wednesday at 6.30pm sharp. With good weather expected again this week players are asked to arrive early to ensure that golf can commence on time.
Society & Terencia Carragher Cups
Watch out for a new format for these two cups that will be announced in the coming weeks. New format will include top 16 for each cup to qualify out of a pre-designated weekend competition before advancing on to a match play finsh. More details to follow next week.
