This weeks winner in the senior competition was either Breige Horgan or Rita O Loughlin - the white flag was raised and a stewards enquiry was announced. One of them better bake the cake for next week or there will be trouble. Breige's cake was very popular and delicious, but Rita , given her former career could be a hard act to follow. This weeks winner should be judged on the cakes and not the golf!
Kathleen Laverty won the the senior competition three weeks ago - I don't know what her cake was like!!!

Josephine Wins First Lady Captains Day Prize in Style
Lady Captains Day last Saturday as usual brought glorious sunshine and a host of Lady Golfers to Blayney Golf Course.
With the first draw time at 9.30am, the club house was a busy of activity from early Saturday morning to very early Sunday morning. A full turn out of Blayney ladies turned up to win this coveted title and magnificent prize to go with it.
The prizes on display for all the winners were the encouragement needed for a great day of golf. But of course there was the play-off to contend with. The highest 12 scores and equals after the 18 holes to qualify for a final 9 holes to get a winner.
This ensured the club house was packed all day and a great atmosphere and excitement resulted with all players waiting to know f they made the cut. The waiting ladies were well catered for by Lady Captain Marie Leonard family who show great hospitality to all in the club house. Notably Marie's daughter Marina, who kept us all supplied with heavenly cakes and crack.
As the final ladies came off the course the announcement was duly made on the qualifiers.
Three ladies shot a magnificent 44 points to qualify, Cathriona Bolger, Moria O Brien & Eithinne Mc Aviney.
Then Josephine Mc Cahey on 41 points , Mary Carville 40 points Cathriona Craig 38 points. The remaining qualifiers were Carmel Mc Aleavey, Auriel Heavin. Vera Conlon, Alice Duffy, Eileen Mc Donald, Michelle Costello and Mary Heavin.
With the play offs scheduled for 5 O Clock. there was little time for the ladies to get nervous. The caddies were duly organised and the ladies returned to the course for the final battle. Some of the ladies coped well with the large gallery of spectators who turned up, other found it a bit nerve reaching. Nevertheless the gallery were treated to some fine displays of golf.
The leading qualifiers went out last. With all three ladies on equal points this was going to be a test of nerves. The three ladies played some excellent golf at times, however with Cathrina Bolger hitting her usual long and out of sight drives and Eithinne playing very tidally around the greens, the winner would surely come from either of these two ladies. The eight hole seen Eithinne lose her drive in the woods and left her with no points on this hole. Cathriona Bolger while having a great drive on the ninth, failed to make the green with her second and this left Eithinne with the advantage again. With Eithinne taking a 5 giving 3 points this left her with 18pts for the final nine and 62 for the 27 holes. Cathriona finished with 16 pts. leaving her with 60 points.
But Josephine Mc Cahey had a different ending in mind. Shooting 18 points on her final nine this left her in contention also with a 62. Josephine captured the title on the breakdown. A very popular and well bet lady for this title. One of many to come.
Best score and strongest golf on the final nine came from Cathryna Craig with 21 points. Unfortunately the 6 point gap on the leading qualifiers was just a bit big to make up and Cathryna finished up with a total of 59 pts on the 27 holes played.

Lady Captains Day 22nd July
The long awaited Lady Captains day has arrived at last. With a full name sheet of members and guests, this promises to be one to remember.
Lady Captain has pulled out all the stops to make this a memorable day for all. A lot of ladies have hit form recently and look good bets, Namely Mary Carville, Cathryna Craig, Janette Keenan and of course not forgetting Breige Horgan and Rita O Loughlin who are always in the shake up. Maybe one to watch could be Moria O Brien. Moria has played on a lot of teams this year and has played steady golf in the weekly competitions. Another good bet is Carmel Mc Aleavy. Carmel has won her first major competition a few weeks back and could capture this good form again on Saturday. I think I'll have to stick with steady , calm and cool Mary Carville. With the fantastic score recorded in Cavan in the Hilton Shield competition, the brilliant 66 net shot last week, Mary should produce this great form again in Blayney on Saturday .
Good luck to all and especially , Lady Captain Marie Leonard, who I am sure will enjoy and savour every minute of it.

Mary hitting form for the big one!
Well done to Mary Carville on returning a nett 66 last week in the Coogan Couriers sponsored competition. Mary was also rewarded with a full two shot reduction in her handicap. This is the biggest reduction for an individual competition this year in the club.
Mary has been shaping up all season for this, producing remarkable individual performances in the Hilton Shield, Autumn Teams and Breffini Shields competitions. A good bet for Lady Captains Day.
Play-Off Announced for Lady Captains Day
Lady Captain Marie Leonard announced a change to the normal run competition for her big day.
A play-off will be run between the top ladies on the evening of the competition. This had not been done in quite a few years in the club - so here's hoping it will produce a lot of excitement and a full gallery of spectators.

Three Major Competitions held over a short period in Blayney
A number of big competitions held over the past two weeks had a variety of winners.
A popular winner of Longfield Rose Bowl held on Sunday past was Josephine Mc Cahey with a great score of 71 nett, enabling Josephine to loose a shot off her handicap.
Josephine played steady golf throughout the round and hit some magnificent fairway shots to claim this lovely prize.
Yvonne Duffy presented the prize to a delighted Josephine and the other prize winners on Sunday evening. Yvonne's refreshments was very much appreciated by all the ladies who played- especially Annette's cheesecake.
Another popular winner was Carmel Mc Aleavey who claimed top place in the Teresa Mc Hugh Cup, held on the 11th June.
This was Carmel's first major win and rightfully deserved with the brilliant golf she played. Carmel also won third place the previous Thursday in the Bank of Ireland competition, beaten on the breakdown, which saw three players finish on the same score of 70 nett.
Kathleen Laverty also was a winner of another major prize - 02 Challenge Cup, with 42 points, played on the 15th June.

Menolly Homes - Blayney ladies defeated by Armagh
Blayney were hoping to avenge the defeat by Armagh in the Mail On Sunday Competition earlier this month, but with Armagh putting out an even stronger team it was a difficult task for the Blayney ladies and team manager Liz Coleman.
With two matches at home and two matches away this should have been an advantage to Blayney, but it didn't turn out that way.

Lady Captain's Drive In
Blayney's new Lady Captain Marie Leonard didn't ask for much on her big day - just a good turn out, sunshine and a big drive. Well she got it all, especially the drive. Straight down the fairway and into the distance. Captain Aidrean took to the tee box also to have a drive or two, just for the photos!
The ladies turn out was at a optimum and with plenty of practice during the last few week with the Spring League, the expectations were high for a good score.

Mementos Spring League
Lady Captains Team of Eileen Kerr and Moira O Brien just the one point now ahead of nearest rivals, thanks to a great score of 19 points from the captain of the team Eileen Kerr. Eileen and Marie have scored the highest number of individual points to day in the league with 78 & 79 points. So it is no surprise why this team is ahead. However Jo mc Cahey 's team is nicking away at their heels by taken in the big scores weekly in the 20's ,to play catch up.
Two teams are in third spot on 127 points each - Catriona Bolger team of Eithine Mc Aviney & Michelle Costello, and the team of Faela Heavin & Rose Mc Bride. With only 9points adrift of the top team, both these teams will be playing hard to bridge that gap.
In fifth place is the team of Fionuala Mc Eneaney, Cait Quinn & Maria Carville. Fionuala back from injury beginning to hit form and the ever dependable Cait Quinn & Maria Carville should close down the teams above them.
